Saving a Dragon’s Heart

The slow drip, drip, dripping of a water source filling up one drop of water at a time permeated my senses. It’s been a week since my captors strung me up in this cave and left me to rot, with a solitary guard to make sure I didn’t die before they came back. Idiots believed me when I said I left the treasure in my library. The chains clinked as I rubbed my stomach feeling the smooth surface and the steady beat of a heart.

A yell caught my attention followed by a short scuffle. “Kat! Kathrine!” A familiar voice echoed through the cave.  “Where are you?”

“Right here,” I croaked. I had to use the wall to stand up wincing at the pain in my stomach. A torch came into view followed by my boss in his wolf armor. “Hey Drake, you got a dagger?”

He pulled one out of his belt handing it to me hilt first. “Are you sure getting caught was the best option?” He reprimanded.

“I was out of options,” I explained cutting along the scar line just below my ribs.

“What the hell are you doing?” Jordan came out from behind Drake her face paling in the torch light.

I gave her a wane smile as I reached into the wound. “Lesson number one dear protege. If you want to keep something hidden. Keep it close.” I removed the green stone it’s light pulsing in my hand. “Pyra’s heart. Just like I promised.”
